        'A' leads letters; the Ancient Lord             1
        Leads and lords the entire world.

        ¿üÈ¡ý ¦¾¡Æ¡«÷ ±É¢ý.
        That lore is vain which does not fall           2
        At His good feet who knoweth all.

        Long they live on earth who gain                3
        The feet of God in florid brain.

        Who has the senses signed away.

        ÁÉì¸Å¨Ä Á¡üÈø «¡¢Ð.
        His feet, whose likeness none can find,         7
        Alone can ease the anxious mind.

        Who swims the sea of vice is he                 8
        Who clasps the feet of Virtue's sea.

        The genial rain ambrosia call:                  11
        The world but lasts while rain shall fall.

12.        ÐôÀ¡÷ìÌò ÐôÀ¡Â ÐôÀ¡ì¸¢ò ÐôÀ¡÷ìÌò
        ÐôÀ¡Â à¯õ Á¨Æ.
        The rain begets the food we eat                 12
        And forms a food and drink concrete.

13.        Å¢ñ­ýÚ ¦À¡öôÀ¢ý Å¢¡¢¿£÷ Å¢ÂÛĸòÐ
        ¯û¿¢ýÚ ¯¼üÚõ Àº¢.
        Let clouds their visits stay, and dearth        13
        Distresses all the sea-girt earth.

14.        ²¡¢ý ¯Æ¡«÷ ¯ÆÅ÷ ÒÂø±ýÛõ
        Å¡¡¢ ÅÇíÌýÈ¢ì ¸¡ø.
        Unless the fruitful shower descend,             14
        The ploughman's sacred toil must end.

15.        ¦¸ÎôÀà¯õ ¦¸ð¼¡÷ìÌî º¡÷Å¡öÁü È¡í§¸
        ±ÎôÀà¯õ ±øÄ¡õ Á¨Æ.
        Destruction it may sometimes pour               15
        But only rain can life restore.

16.        Å¢ÍõÀ¢ý ÐǢţƢý «øÄ¡øÁü È¡í§¸
        ÀÍõÒø ¾¨Ä¸¡ñÒ «¡¢Ð.
        No grassy blade its head will rear,             16
        If from the cloud no drop appear.

17.        ¦¿Îí¸¼Öõ ¾ý¿£÷¨Á ÌýÚõ ¾Êó¦¾Æ¢Ä¢
        ¾¡ý¿ø¸¡ ¾¡¸¢ Å¢Êý.
        The ocean's wealth will waste away,             17
        Except the cloud its stores repay.

18.        º¢Èô¦À¡Î âº¨É ¦ºøÄ¡Ð Å¡Éõ
        ÅÈì̧Áø Å¡§É¡÷ìÌõ ®ñÎ.
        The earth, beneath a barren sky,                18
        Would offerings for the gods deny.

19.        ¾¡Éõ ¾ÅÁ¢ÃñÎõ ¾í¸¡ Å¢ÂÛĸõ
        Å¡Éõ ÅÆí¸¡ ¦¾É¢ý.
        Were heaven above to fail below                 19
        Nor alms nor penance earth would show.

        Å¡ý­ýÚ «¨Á¡Р´ØìÌ.
        Water is life that comes from rain              20
        Sans rain our duties go in vain.

        As theirs who sense and self deny.

        To con ascetic glory here                       22
        Is to count the dead upon the sphere.

23.        ­Õ¨Á Ũ¸¦¾¡¢óÐ ®ñΫÈõ âñ¼¡÷
        ¦ÀÕ¨Á À¢Èí¸¢üÚ ¯ÄÌ.
        No lustre can with theirs compare               23
        Who know the right and virtue wear.

24.        ¯Ã¦ÉýÛó §¾¡ðÊ¡ý µ¨ÃóÐõ ¸¡ôÀ¡ý
        ÅæÉýÛõ ¨ÅôÀ¢ü§¸¡÷ Å¢òÐ.
        With hook of firmness to restrain               24
        The senses five, is heaven to gain.

25.        ³ó¾Å¢ò¾¡ý ¬üÈø «¸øÅ¢ÍõÒ Ç¡÷§¸¡Á¡ý
        ­ó¾¢Ã§É º¡Öí ¸¡¢.
        Indra himself has cause to say                  25
        How great the power ascetics' sway.

26.        ¦ºÂü¸¡¢Â ¦ºöÅ¡÷ ¦À¡¢Â÷ º¢È¢Â÷
        ¦ºÂü¸¡¢Â ¦ºö¸Ä¡ ¾¡÷.
        The small the paths of ease pursue              26
        The great achieve things rare to do.

27.        ͨŦ¡Ǣ °§È¡¨º ¿¡üȦÁýÚ ³ó¾¢ý
        Ũ¸¦¾¡¢ Å¡ý ¸ð§¼ ¯ÄÌ.
        They gain the world, who grasp and tell         27
        Of taste, sight, hearing, touch and smell.

28.        ¿¢¨È¦Á¡Æ¢ Á¡ó¾÷ ¦ÀÕ¨Á ¿¢ÄòÐ
        Á¨È¦Á¡Æ¢ ¸¡ðÊ Å¢Îõ.
        Full-worded men by what they say,               28
        Their greatness to the world display.

29.        ̽¦ÁýÛõ Ìý§ÈÈ¢ ¿¢ýÈ¡÷ ¦ÅÌÇ¢
        ¸½§ÁÔí ¸¡ò¾ø «¡¢Ð.
        Their wrath, who've climb'd the mount of good,  29
        Though transient, cannot be withstood.

30.        «ó¾½÷ ±ý§À¡÷ «È§Å¡÷Áü ¦Èù×¢÷ìÌõ
        ¦ºó¾ñ¨Á âñ¦¼¡Ø¸ Ä¡ý.
        With gentle mercy towards all,                  30
        The sage fulfils the vitue's call.

        From virtue weal and wealth outflow;            31
        What greater good can mankind know?

32.        «Èò¾¢ëíÌ ¬ì¸õ ­ø¨Ä «¾¨É
        ÁÈò¾Ä¢ý °í¸¢ø¨Ä §¸Î.
        Virtue enhances joy and gain;                   32
        Forsaking it is fall and pain.

33.        ´øÖõ Ũ¸Â¡ý «ÈÅ¢¨É µÅ¡§¾
        ¦ºøÖõÅ¡ö ±øÄ¡ï ¦ºÂø.
        Perform good deeds as much you can              33
        Always and everywhere, o man!

34.        ÁÉòÐì¸ñ Á¡º¢Äý ¬¾ø «¨ÉòÐ «Èý
        ¬ÌÄ ¿£Ã À¢È.
        In spotless mind virtue is found                34
        And not in show and swelling sound.

        ­Ø측 ­ÂýÈÐ «Èõ.
        Four ills eschew and virtue reach,              35
        Lust, anger, envy, evil-speech.

36.        «ýÈȢšõ ±ýÉ¡Ð «È了ö¸ ÁüÈÐ
        ¦À¡ýÚí¸¡ø ¦À¡ýÈ¡ò Ш½.
        Do good enow; defer it not                      36
        A deathless aid in death if sought.

37.        «Èò¾¡Ú ­Ð¦ÅÉ §Åñ¼¡ º¢Å¢¨¸
        ¦À¡Úò¾¡§É¡Î °÷ó¾¡ý ­¨¼.
        Litter-bearer and rider say                     37
        Without a word, the fortune's way.

38.        Å£ú¿¡û À¼¡«¨Á ¿ýÈ¡üÈ¢ý «·¦¾¡ÕÅý
        Å¡ú¿¡û ÅƢ¨¼ìÌí ¸ø.
        Like stones that block rebirth and pain         38
        Are doing good and good again.

39.        «Èò¾¡ý ÅÕŧ¾ ­ýÀõ Áü¦ÈøÄ¡õ
        ÒÈò¾ Ò¸Øõ ­Ä.
        Weal flows only from virtue done                39
        The rest is rue and renown gone.

        Worthy act is virtue done                       40

        The ideal householder is he                     41
        Who aids the natural orders there.

42.        ÐÈó¾¡÷ìÌõ ÐùÅ¡ ¾Å÷ìÌõ ­Èó¾¡÷ìÌõ
        ­øÅ¡úÅ¡ý ±ýÀ¡ý Ш½.
        His help the monk and retired share,            42
        And celibate students are his care.

43.        ¦¾ýÒÄò¾¡÷ ¦¾öÅõ Å¢Õ󧾡ì¸ø ¾¡¦ÉýÈ¡íÌ
        ³õÒÄò¾¡Ú µõÀø ¾¨Ä.
        By dutiful householder's aid                    43
        God, manes, kin, self and guests are served.

        ÅÆ¢¦Âïºø ±ï»¡ýÚõ ­ø.
        Sin he shuns and food he shares                 44
        His home is bright and brighter fares.

45.        «ýÒõ «ÈÛõ ¯¨¼ò¾¡Â¢ý ­øÅ¡ú쨸
        ÀñÒõ ÀÂÛõ «Ð.
        In grace and gain the home excels,              45
        Where love with virtue sweetly dwells.

46.        «Èò¾¡üÈ¢ý ­øÅ¡ú쨸 ¬üÈ¢ý ÒÈò¾¡üÈ¢ý
        §À¡´öô ¦ÀÚÅ ¦¾Åý.
        Who turns from righteous family                 46
        To be a monk, what profits he?

47.        ­ÂøÀ¢É¡ý ­øÅ¡ú쨸 Å¡úÀÅý ±ýÀ¡ý
        ÓÂøÅ¡Õû ±øÄ¡õ ¾¨Ä.
        Of all who strive for bliss, the great          47
        Is he who leads the married state.

48.        ¬üÈ¢ý ´Ø츢 «ÈÉ¢Ø측 ­øÅ¡ú쨸
        §¿¡üÀ¡¡¢ý §¿¡ý¨Á ¯¨¼òÐ.
        Straight in virtue, right in living             48
        Make men brighter than monks praying.

49.        «Èý ±Éô À𼧾 ­øÅ¡ú쨸 «·Ðõ
        À¢ÈýÀÆ¢ôÀ ¾¢øġ¢ý ¿ýÚ.
        Home-life and virtue, are the same;             49
        Which spotless monkhood too can claim.

50.        ¨ÅÂò¾¢ý Å¡úÅ¡íÌ Å¡úÀÅý Å¡ý¯¨ÈÔõ
        ¦¾öÅòÐû ¨Åì¸ô ÀÎõ.
        He is a man of divine worth                     50
        Who lives in ideal home on earth.

51.        Á¨Éì¾ì¸ Á¡ñÒ¨¼Âû ¬¸¢ò¾ü ¦¸¡ñ¼¡ý
        ÅÇò¾ì¸¡û Å¡ú쨸ò Ш½.
        A good housewife befits the house,              51
        Spending with thrift the mate's resource.

52.        Á¨ÉÁ¡ðº¢ ­øÄ¡û¸ñ ­øġ¢ý Å¡ú쨸
        ±¨ÉÁ¡ðº¢ò ¾¡Â¢Ûõ ­ø.
        Bright is home when wife is chaste.             52
        If not all greatness is but waste.

53.        ­øĦ¾ý ­øÄÅû Á¡ñÀ¡É¡ø ¯ûǦ¾ý
        ­øÄÅû Á¡½¡ì ¸¨¼.
        What is rare when wife is good.                 53
        What can be there when she is bad?

        ¾¢ñ¨Á¯ñ ¼¡¸ô ¦ÀÈ¢ý.
        What greater fortune is for men                 54
        Than a constant chaste woman?

55.        ¦¾öÅõ ¦¾¡Æ¡«û ¦¸¡Ø¿ý ¦¾¡Ø¦¾ØÅ¡û
        ¦Àö¦ÂÉô ¦ÀöÔõ Á¨Æ.
        Her spouse before God who adores,               55
        Is like rain that at request pours.

56.        ¾ü¸¡òÐò ¾ü¦¸¡ñ¼¡ü §À½¢ò ¾¨¸º¡ýÈ
        ¦º¡ü¸¡òÐî §º¡÷Ţġû ¦Àñ.
        The good wife guards herself from blame,        56
        She tends her spouse and brings him fame.

57.        º¢¨È¸¡ìÌõ ¸¡ôÀ¦Åý ¦ºöÔõ Á¸Ç¢÷
        ¿¢¨È¸¡ìÌõ ¸¡ô§À ¾¨Ä.
        Of what avail are watch and ward?               57
        Their purity is women's guard.

58.        ¦ÀüÈ¡ü ¦ÀÈ¢ý¦ÀÚÅ÷ ¦ÀñÊ÷ ¦ÀÕﺢÈôÒô
        Òò§¾Ç¢÷ Å¡Øõ ¯ÄÌ.
        Women who win their husbands' heart             58
        Shall flourish where the gods resort.

59.        Ò¸úÒ¡¢ó¾ ­øÄ¢§Ä¡÷ìÌ ­ø¨Ä ­¸úÅ¡÷Óý
        ²Ú§À¡ø À£Î ¿¨¼.
        A cuckold has not the lion-like gait            59
        Before his detractors aright.

60.        Áí¸Äõ ±ýÀ Á¨ÉÁ¡ðº¢ ÁüÚ «¾ý
        ¿ý¸Äõ ¿ýÁì¸ð §ÀÚ.
        An honest wife is home's delight                60
        And children good are jewels abright.

        Áì¸ð§ÀÚ «øÄ À¢È.
        The world no higher bliss bestows               61
        Than children virtuous and wise.

62.        ±ØÀ¢ÈôÒõ ¾£Â¨Å ¾£ñ¼¡ ÀÆ¢À¢Èí¸¡ô
        ÀñÒ¨¼ Áì¸ð ¦ÀÈ¢ý.
        No evil comes and no blemish;                   62
        Noble sons bring all we wish.

63.        ¾õ¦À¡Õû ±ýÀ¾õ Áì¸û «Å÷¦À¡Õû
        ¾õ¾õ Å¢¨É¡ý ÅÕõ.
        Children are one's wealth indeed                63
        Their wealth is measured by their deed.

64.        «Á¢ú¾¢Ûõ ¬üÈ ­É¢§¾¾õ Áì¸û
        º¢Ú¨¸ «Ç¡Å¢Â Üú.
        The food is more than nectar sweet              64
        In which one's children hands insert.

65.        Áì¸û¦Áö ¾£ñ¼ø ¯¼ü¸¢ýÀõ ÁüÚ «Å÷
        ¦º¡ü§¸ð¼ø ­ýÀõ ¦ºÅ¢ìÌ.
        Children's touch delights the body              65
        Sweet to ears are their words lovely.

66.        ÌÆø ­É¢Ð ¡ú­É¢Ð ±ýÀ¾õ Áì¸û
        ÁƨÄ¡ø §¸Ç¡ ¾Å÷.
        The flute and lute are sweet they say           66
        Deaf to baby's babble's lay!

67.        ¾ó¨¾ Á¸ü¸¡üÚ ¿ýÈ¢ «¨ÅÂòÐ
        Óó¾¢ ­ÕôÀÀî ¦ºÂø.
        A father's duty to his son is                   67
        To seat him in front of the wise.

68.        ¾õÁ¢ý¾õ Áì¸û «È¢×¨¼¨Á Á¡¿¢ÄòÐ
        ÁýÛ¢÷ì ¦¸øÄ¡õ ­É¢Ð.
        With joy the hearts of parents swell            68
        To see their children themselves excel.

69.        ®ýÈ ¦À¡Ø¾¢ý ¦À¡¢ÐÅìÌõ ¾ýÁ¸¨Éî
        º¡ý§È¡ý ±É째𼠾¡ö.
        The mother, hearing her son's merit             69
        Delights more than when she begot.

70.        Á¸ý¾ó¨¾ìÌ ¬üÚõ ¯¾Å¢ ­Åý¾ó¨¾
        ±ý§¿¡üÈ¡ý ¦¸¡ø ±Ûõ ¦º¡ø.
        The son to sire this word is debt               70
        "What penance such a son begot!"

        What bolt can bar true love in fact             71
        The tricking tears reveal the heart.

72.        «ýÀ¢Ä¡÷ ±øÄ¡õ ¾ÁìÌ¡¢Â÷ «ýÒ¨¼Â¡÷
        ±ýÒõ ¯¡¢Â÷ À¢È÷ìÌ.
        To selves belong the loveless ones;             72
        To oth'rs the loving e'en to bones.

73.        «ý§À¡Î ­¨Âó¾ ÅÆ즸ýÀ ¬Õ¢÷ìÌ
        ±ý§À¡Î ­¨Âó¾ ¦¾¡¼÷Ò.
        Soul is encased in frame of bone                73
        To taste the life of love alone.

74.        «ýÒ ®Ûõ ¬÷Åõ ¯¨¼¨Á «Ð®Ûõ
        ¿ñÒ ±ýÛõ ¿¡¼¡î º¢ÈôÒ.
        Love yields aspiration and thence               74
        Friendship springs up in excellence.

75.        «ýÒüÚ «Á÷ó¾ ÅÆ즸ýÀ ¨Å¸òÐ
        ­ýÒüÈ¡÷ ±öÐõ º¢ÈôÒ.
        The crowning joy of home life flows             75
        From peaceful psychic love always.
